Kind 很容易理解，卻很難完全翻譯出它寬廣的意義，不如就來看它的同義詞跟反義詞。
溫和的、寬厚的、仁慈的、對人充滿同情與憐憫的態度，以及願意為別人設想，懷抱使人愉悅、成全別人的心意；反之則是殘酷、冷漠、無情的。
對於從小接受儒家及公民道德教育的我們來說，要做到 Kind 似乎不難；但如果這個真的很簡單，耶穌也不必以身作則教導門徒，使徒保羅也不用寫信給哥林多教會的眾弟兄們再耳提面命一番了。
對於倡導性惡論的荀子而言，「人之性惡，其善者偽也。」意思是說，為善其實違反人的本性，必須透過後天的學習努力，定意的選擇才能做到。
老子在《道德經》第八章說：「上善若水，水善利萬物而不爭。」水澤被萬物並無分別，但通常我的善意不但有親疏遠近之別，還像水火一樣反覆無常。
對自己的親人好友，或是對自己好的人，要回饋善是比較容易的，而且往往是要先感受到對方對自己的好，我才願意有所回應；有時候，反而是對小狗小貓，或是跟自己完全不相干的人，我比較容易散發憐憫與好意，而且這樣的好意才是真心不求回報的。
